Jason is our resident tech expert – a motivated, dedicated professional who’s years of experience is now helping Universal extend our servicing capability far beyond what we’ve previously been able to offer.

What brought you to the role at Universal Packaging?

After spending the last 20+ years in electrical and mechanical engineering and maintenance, I definitely have a passion for the industry. With this work I’m not only interested in the hands-on and technical stuff but also how maintenance management works – and the systems that need to be in place to make this succeed. This job (at Universal) was the perfect opportunity for me to put those systems in place and see it all grow.

What type of skills do you need for your work?

Basically, it’s lots industrial electrical knowledge, mechanical expertise and understanding the manufacturing processes and maintenance systems. The role also requires a high level of communication, a proactive approach and some good time management. A bit of diplomacy and a lot of confidence helps too.

What does a typical day look like in your job?

After starting somewhere between 7 and 8am, I’m assessing what workshop jobs need completing. Coffee helps in the morning, and I’m always busy sending out work orders, organising parts and planning upcoming servicing and installs.

I’m often out fetching parts from local suppliers at lunch before spending the afternoon in the workshop and warehouse, organising machinery, parts and conducting repairs. There’s also time needed for servicing or repairing equipment on site, so I’m often on the road.

What are the highlights of your work?

In one word: achievement. I aim to please with my work – which is sometimes my best trait and sometimes my worst. The worst? It’s because I never shut off. The best? I’m always doing something for someone, doing what I love and having a real sense of purpose and accomplishment in my work.

And some challenges?

It’s mainly around logistics and availability. Now the business provides a machinery service the technical workload is increasing at a rapid rate. It’s a good challenge to have!

What are you looking to change?

Paperwork! If it can be electronic let’s do that and save a tree!
